More Transitions

Readers of our Outlook newsletter responded so positively to one of the stories we featured last time that we decided to share more on the topic, which was: Making a two-step transition in moving to the Manor. We hope many more of you find this information helpful. Moving is never easy, especially if you’re making a long distance move from another state. What our residents have let us know is that delaying a move doesn’t make the process any easier, in fact, it can hinder it. Planning ahead helps make a difficult task much more manageable, and being creative and flexible in the planning often provides pleasant surprises.

Wayne and Jamie HarrisFor example, when Wayne and Jamie Harris first decided to move to the Manor in 2003, they had their eyes on a three-bedroom cottage, but none were available when they were ready to move. So instead, they moved into a two-bedroom cottage temporarily, with the intention of waiting for a three-bedroom to become available. In the meantime, they became immersed in the wonderful Manor lifestyle and discovered that the two-bedroom they were living in suited their needs just fine. They decided to stay put, and are still living happily in their “temporary” two-bedroom cottage.

Before coming to the Manor one year ago, Carole Brown and her husband Wayne Thomas lived in Palo Alto, California. They researched CCRCs and decided when the time was right, they would move to the Manor. They had toured the campus, reviewed the many available floor plans, and selected their first, second, and third choices. However, at the time, they envisioned themselves moving to the Manor several years in the future.

Carole Brown & Wayne ThomasAs Wayne tells the story, “We didn’t think we’d be moving to the Manor so quickly. We knew we wanted to start the process by selling our home when we thought the time was right and getting started on downsizing. So that’s what we did. We rented a condominium in Palo Alto and moved in. Then a couple of things happened almost simultaneously: the apartment floor plan we liked the best became available. It’s on the southeast corner of Skyline Plaza. Carole and I discussed it, and we came to the conclusion that it could be years before our first choice became available again.

Then, another thing happened. There was an opportunity for me to become involved in some real estate development up in southern Oregon—something which I had been looking into for some time. So we said to ourselves, ‘the time is right, right now!’ And so we moved in, years before we expected to.”

As Wayne’s and Carole’s experience shows, it’s always better to be prepared sooner rather than later. If they hadn’t sold their home and moved to a condo, they might not have been able to reserve their first-choice apartment home in Skyline Plaza, and Wayne would have had to delay his new business venture.

So, in thinking about your own move to the Rogue Valley Manor, we encourage you “think outside the box” and explore the possibility of making a two-step transition yourself.
