Barbara Macdonald moved to the Manor from Pacific Palisades, California. Rather than sell her home of 21 years and moving directly to the Manor, she decided to downsize, pack up, move to southern Oregon, and rent an apartment while she waited for the right accommodation to become available at the Manor. She says,“It turned out to be a fabulous way to make the transition, in so many ways.” First, Barbara knew she wanted a two-bedroom with a specific type of view, and she was willing to wait until the perfect place became available. Because she lived so close to the Manor, whenever a two-bedroom apartment or cottage became available, she could visit the campus and determine whether it met her needs. She says, “Having a particular view was very important to me because it’s what I had at my home in the Palisades. Everyone is going to have something that is especially important to them, and by living close by, you can make sure you get exactly what you want.” Barbara, who now enjoys a spectacular 180-degree view of the valley and Centennial Golf Club, says moving to Medford and renting gave her the chance to get settled and organized. She found a church to attend, discovered which stores she liked, got her driver’s license and car insurance, and took care of all the other things that need to be handled when moving from one state to another. “Moving this way allowed me to move when the time was right for me, in my own time frame,” she says. “It also gave me the opportunity to get to know Medford on my own, before getting involved with life at the Manor. For me it was a tremendous advantage to move this way.” Resident Richard Finch, who moved from Palo Alto, California, and rented in Medford, agrees.“It was so easy to move,” he says.“I did all the hard work long before. When I moved to the rental apartment, I didn’t even unpack. Maria and Ollie Trumbauer are a couple who moved to the Manor from Thousand Oaks in southern California. They downsized, packed only what they wanted to keep, moved to Medford, and rented a condominium while they waited for the ideal cottage to become available. As Ollie explains, it worked to their advantage. “After we sold our house, we needed to find a place to live until the type of place we wanted became available at the Manor,” he says. “We could have rented in California, but we decided to move up to southern Oregon and rent, thereby saving ourselves a lot of money compared with what we would have paid in the California market. Rent is much more affordable in Oregon.” Ollie says that moving to Medford beforehand also helped them get a head start on life at the Manor. “We got involved in many campus activities and made new friends. It was great. And because we made so many new friends, we got the chance to see all different kinds of apartments and cottages when visiting. Also, we rented right down the hill from the Manor so, as places became available, we could just go up the street and look at them.” The move has been everything he and Maria dreamed it would be. “We feel like we live on a cruise ship, he says. “It’s just wonderful here.”
