Community Housing by Pacific Retirement Services, the PRS affiliate that offers affordable housing to low-income seniors, opened in 1985. Now, 22 years later, it operates 24 affordable senior housing communities, making it one of the largest affordable-housing developers in the nation.

Dena Smith, Vice President of PRS’s Community Housing division, says, “Our newest community, Magnolia Heights, is currently being developed in Mansfield, Texas. This is our third affordable-housing community in the state of Texas, and when it’s complete it will be PRS’s twenty-fifth affordable-housing community. That’s something all of us are very proud of.”

As Dena and her staff of more than 50 know, developing affordable senior housing communities is no easy task. Government housing programs are notoriously complicated. Understanding the available funding sources, navigating the incredibly complex maze of government procedures and regulations, and staying abreast of the ever-changing industry ground rules can seem impossibly difficult.

But with nearly 25 years of experience working though the federal government’s Housing and Urban Development program, Dena and her staff have what it takes to move from initial grant-writing proposals to having an operational community.

“Creating affordable senior housing for low-income individuals is a meaningful and rewarding endeavor,” says Dena. “It can also be extremely difficult to accomplish. I’m so appreciative of the great work ethic, tenacity, and talent of my staff. We are a team in the truest sense of the word. We work together cohesively to accomplish one goal, and that’s to provide secure, comfortable accommodations for low-income citizens.”
