Continuing Care Supports Healthy Aging for Years to Come

Yes, Mirabella is a Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC), but there certainly isn't anything "retiring" about it. The accommodations, amenities, and programs it offers have been designed for vital, independent people who look forward to many more years filled with health, happiness, friendship, and fun.

Description: DSC_0250 small.tif Many people, especially those who are relatively young, make the mistake of thinking that Continuing Care Retirement Communities are just another type of "old folks' home." In fact, nothing could be farther from the truth. CCRCs are designed to promote, support, and celebrate successful aging for all residents, no matter where they are in the aging continuum.

Most of our residents will tell you that once they moved to Mirabella and experienced the remarkable lifestyle, they wished they would have moved in earlier. You can hear them tell you this themselves by visiting our Testimonials page.

Mirabella, as a CCRC, offers residents all of the tools they need to age successfully for years to come:

Healthy Fine Dining

Thanks to our splendid dining program, healthy eating is easy. Our Executive Chef and the Dining Services Team prepare food from scratch, creating a wide variety of delicious heart-healthy meals. There are several salads, soups, sides, fresh fruits, and entrées to choose from each day. So, no matter what you're in the mood for, you'll find something that will nourish your body and delight your palate.

No matter where your interests lie, you'll find many different types of activities and events to enjoy each day. There are groups that gather for woodworking, sewing, line dancing, bridge, and mah-jongg. There are book clubs, quarterly art shows, and musical presentations. There are educational programs and lectures about health, history, current news, and world affairs. The choice is yours!

Aquatics Program

Our Aquatics Center offers world-class services and equipment that rival any luxury spa. There are two saline Indoor Pools: one for lap swimming, the other for aqua-aerobics and aquatic therapy. There's also a Jacuzzi, and convenient locker rooms.

Fitness Program

Out Fitness Center is equipped with state-of-the-art exercise machines, treadmills, seated elliptical trainers, stationary bikes, free weights, stability balls, and other balance enhancers. It also offers a studio where many different types of exercise classes are held, including circuit training, low-impact aerobics, stretch and tone, tai chi, and more. You can even schedule private training sessions with our Personal Trainer, who will instruct you on how to use all of the equipment properly and create an exercise program that is customized for your unique needs.

Continuing Care for a Lifetime

We offer all levels of care, so if your needs increase over time, you'll have the peace-of-mind of knowing that you (or your children) won't have to struggle finding a place that can provide the care you require. Over time, if you begin to need ongoing medication management or help with daily activities, you can move to one of our spacious Assisted Living apartments. Our Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Center is Medicare Certified and provides outstanding care and services. We also have our own Memory Care center, which is designed for residents with Alzheimer's and other types of cognitive impairment.

Resident Profile – Meet Mr. Alan Boyd

Description: alan boyd 009 cropped smalll.jpg You'll Meet No One but Friends Here

"You'll meet no one but friends here," says Mirabella resident Alan Boyd. "That's one of the best things about living here. The other residents are what really make this place. It's the greatest group of people I've ever been with. Everyone is so friendly and very, very interesting."

Alan is certainly among those interesting people. He served as the Secretary of Transportation during Lyndon Johnson's administration, and he was the President of Amtrak for four years.

The Boyds had been living in Central Florida, but as time passed, they wanted to be nearer to their son and grandchildren, who live in Seattle. At their son's urging, they packed up their home, bought a condominium, and moved to the Seattle suburb of Edmonds. Alan says, "We loved living in Edmonds, it's a wonderful area. But as we grew older, we knew we wanted to find a place that could take care of any future health needs that we might have. We made it very clear to our son and his family that we were not going to be a burden on them. We wanted to make plans to take care of ourselves."

Alan and his wife Flavil looked at several retirement communities in the Seattle area, but they didn't find one to their liking. Finally, someone told them about Mirabella. The Boyd's visited Mirabella, and they reserved an apartment home on the spot. They chose a one-bedroom apartment with views of the main entrance and courtyard. Sadly, Flavil passed away before the Boyds moved to Mirabella. As Alan says, "Yes, it was very sad, but we had 64 wonderful years together."

Alan feels that moving to Mirabella helped him deal with losing his wife. "I didn't want to live completely alone. I didn't want to become a recluse. It was good having so many friendly, helpful people around me."

Being a part of the tight knit Mirabella community also helped him as he was recovering from a recent surgery. "As time has gone by, it's become more and more of a true community. So many friendships have developed. It's been an amazing experience to me. While I was recovering I received so many cards and flowers and phone calls. The other residents really do care. I cannot imagine living in a warmer, more caring place."

Today, Alan is one of Mirabella's most active and involved residents. When he first moved to Mirabella he served on the Health & Wellness Advisory Committee and on the Environmental Services Committee. He currently serves on the Governance Committee. He says, "I think it's important for all residents to serve on a committee. I think we all should serve on several of them."

Alan also acts as the Master of Ceremonies for Joke Night, Poetry Night, Limerick Night, and other events designed to help residents keep their minds sharp and have fun at the same time. "I always try to keep people laughing—or, if they get too rambunctious, I get them back under control. It's a lot of fun."

How to Find New Friends in Unusual Places

Description: SeniorAsianCoupleB.hires.jpg

Research shows that people with more social interaction lead longer, more vibrant lives. But what if you can't find others who share your interests? Did you know that you could use Facebook to find new friends?

All Facebook users start with an individual profile page that they use to share information with people they choose to "friend." Some people also "like" business pages, such as Mirabella's Facebook page, in order to stay on top of news, specials, and events offered by that business or organization. Still others join Facebook groups in order to find people with similar interests. This is especially helpful for those who have unusual hobbies or life issues and want to connect with others in a similar situation who may live far away.

Here are steps on how to find Facebook groups you may be interested in:

  1. Log in to your personal Facebook account and type subject keywords into the search box at the top. Sometimes the closest matching Facebook page will pop up. Sometimes a list of various Facebook pages on that topic will appear, including personal and business pages.
  2. If a list appears, narrow your search with the SEARCH FILTERS in the left margin. Select "Groups," which will narrow that list of Facebook pages to just groups. Then click on any group name to visit its page and learn more.
  3. If you want to interact with the people in that group, click on "Join Group" near the top right corner, under the pictures.

Another way to find Facebook groups is to use a search engine like Google or Yahoo. Just type in a set of keywords like "Facebook watercolor group" or "Facebook veteran caregivers support group" and the search engine will provide a list of closely related options.

If you're not a fan of Facebook, you could try Twitter instead. Visit www.twitter.com/search to see who's talking about your favorite topic. If you want to "follow" some interesting folks – and talk with them – you'll need to create a free profile first. Don't forget to follow the Mirabella Twitter feed, too.

Happy hunting!
