Linda and John Van Peenan moved to Cascade Manor in 2006. The couple had lived in the Pacific Northwest in the past and wanted to come back after living in Oklahoma and caring for Linda’s mother for a while. They looked at many places in Washington and Oregon. But when they walked into Cascade Manor, they found what they were looking for. “The people were nice and very accommodating, and the Garden apartments had just been completed. It meant there would be a lot of new people moving in. Since we were new to Eugene, we felt it was a perfect opportunity to get involved with a group of people and make new friends,” Linda says. “There’s excellent shopping across the street with groceries and great restaurants. There’s a modern fitness center and a swimming pool on campus. It was the most practical choice for us.”
These days, Linda and John are part of a very active group. Many of the residents are former university professors, and there’s a focus on continuing education here. “There are lectures or educational programs 5 out of 7 nights each week,” she says. “Eugene is also a big music center, and we get to enjoy classical music on campus at least 3-4 times per month. We have season tickets to the Eugene Symphony, and enjoy a small opera company and the ballet quite often,” says Linda. At Cascade Manor, there are movie nights, game nights, and something to do all the time.
You can choose to be as busy as you like. “I’m involved in a lot of activities and on a few committees. I’m also a resident Board Member for the Cascade Manor Foundation,” says Linda. “As a board member, I do a lot of fundraising to support residents at The Manor. We look after the people who live here if they outlive their money”. Linda and John are pleased to live at Cascade Manor. “Eugene is a lovely city, situated between the ocean and the mountains, with many cultural activities. All in all, it is a good choice for us.”
